With the camper or caravanner being spoilt for choice, how do you go about selecting which is best for you? Here you will find an overview of the different types of campsite available in Mayenne, Sarthe, Maine-et-Loire, Loire-Atlantique and Vendée.

Most of the 11,000 or so campsites in France have a rating from one to four stars. These are principally a guide to the services offered and the space available to campers. A 4 star site, for example, must offer pitches of 100 square metres or more. The FFCC provides a comprehensive campsite listing and locator site at Campingfrance.com.

The FFCC star rating is not necessarily a guarantee of the quality of the site and not all sites are listed by the FFCC.

Here are some additional pointers. A campsite may have been awarded the Camping Qualité mark which provides such quality guarantees as maintenance, privacy and cleanliness. A 'Clef Verte' or 'Green Key' mark, (which also covers other types of accommodation) is designed to help tourists choose sites which respect the environment. It can be an indication of low density camping and green open spaces.

‘Bienvenue à la Ferme’ provides a site locator for farms providing a range of accommodation which may include a few pitches usually with basic facilities.

Sometimes it can be revealing to check reports from other visitors. UKCampsite.co.uk for example contains over six pages of reviews which may help in deciding upon which site.

Not all sites may appear on listings and one of the charms of a holiday can be discovering a gem of a site. For example, you won’t find the site shown here, Le Chant d'Oiseau, near Mouliherne in Maine-et-Loire on any of the major listings yet it provides a small number of quality pitches (as well as gites) in a rural idyll.

Whether your preference is for the bustle of the larger sites with massive pool complexes, playgrounds and all manner of facilities as tend to be found along the coasts of Vendeé and Loire-atlantique or a more peaceful laid-back inland site with fewer pitches, Pays de la Loire has a campsite to suit any taste.
